NEWQUAY, CORNWALL

Porth Beach Surf Report & Forecast

Mellow beach break on the outskirts of Newquay with slow, rolling waves. Brilliant for learners and bodyboarders. Wide tidal drop.

Where Porth is

Porth Beach is the sandy bay just north of Newquay's cliff coves, before the coast opens into Watergate Bay. A stream runs out across the sand. The tide drop here is wide: at low tide there is a long walk to the water, which the short guide calls out specifically. It feels quieter than Towan on a busy afternoon, and it is a common choice for families who want an easier wave than Fistral.

The village sits just behind the beach, so once you are off the sand you are close to a cafe and to the car. That is a different day out from the cliff steps at Lusty Glaze or Tolcarne.

Swell and wind

Porth is more sheltered than Watergate and more open than the tightest town coves. It likes swell with some north in it, and it stays smaller than Fistral on a typical west swell. The waves tend to be slower and more rolling, which is useful for learning to stand up and popular with bodyboarders.

A southerly wind is the cleaner direction. A northerly blows onshore and chops the surface. If Watergate is too powerful and Towan is flat, Porth is the beach to look at in between. The live heights on each page are separate forecasts, so check this one rather than splitting the difference in your head.

Tide and who it suits

The rating is beginner. The wide tide is the practical detail: leave time, and do not assume the water's edge is where it was an hour ago. Low tide can push the waves onto shallower sand and make them close out. A higher tide shortens the walk and can be a bit fuller. Those are tendencies of a flat sandy bay, not a timetable.

Learners should stay in their depth and, when lifeguards are on, inside the flags. Intermediates usually move to Watergate or Fistral once they want a steeper wave. Porth is a success on a day when those beaches are too much, not a consolation prize you have to apologise for.

Before you go

Lifeguard cover is listed as summer season. The site marks Porth as having dog restrictions, so check the board before bringing a dog onto the beach. Parking is close to the sand, which is easier with children and kit than the cliff paths in town.

The stream across the beach is fresh water heading for the sea. It can cut a channel, so cross it where it is shallow and do not treat it as a play area when it is pushing after rain. If the bay is flat and you want more wave, Watergate is the next beach north and Towan is back toward the town centre.
