NEWQUAY, CORNWALL

Towan Beach Surf Report & Forecast

The classic learner beach. Protected by Towan Head from dominant W swells. Gentle crumbly waves — ideal for first lessons and building confidence.

Where Towan is

Towan Beach is Newquay's town beach, directly below the centre and on the north side of Towan Head. The headland stands between Towan and Fistral and blocks a lot of the straight west swell that makes Fistral the bigger wave. You reach the sand down steps and paths from the cliff top, a few minutes from the shops. If you searched for a Towan surf report, this is the beach.

It is the cove you can see from much of the town, which is why it is the usual meeting point for lessons. On a small summer day it feels like the centre of Newquay surfing even when Fistral, over the headland, has more size.

Swell and wind

Towan faces more toward the north than Fistral does. Swell has to bend around Towan Head, so an ordinary west swell that is surfable at Fistral can be almost flat here. It starts to work when the swell is bigger, longer-period, or has more north in it. The waves are typically gentler and more broken up than on the open beaches — the crumbly shape learners look for.

Winds with south in them are kinder. A northerly blows into the bay and makes it bumpy. If the town beaches are onshore while Fistral is offshore, or the other way around, that is normal: they face different directions. Compare the live readings rather than assuming one number covers every beach in Newquay.

Tide

The bay is sandy, and the tide changes how much beach you have and which banks are in the water. There is no special tide window published here. Give yourself a few minutes at the top of the steps to see whether the waves are closing out or peeling before you walk down in a wetsuit.

On a big tide the walk to the water can be longer than it looks from the road. The forecast wave height will not show that. It only describes the size of the waves at this spot's coordinates.

Who it suits

This is the beginner beach in the Surf Newquay guide. It is the right call for a first lesson, a longboard session, or anyone who finds Fistral too heavy that day. Intermediates still surf it when a swell wraps in and the banks are kind, but it is not where you go hunting a powerful west swell.

Great Western, the next cove along, is a small step up in size while staying in the shelter of the headlands. Porth, further north, is the other mellow option. If Towan is flat and you can drive, look at Fistral or Watergate Bay before you decide the whole coast is quiet.

Before you go

Lifeguard cover is listed as summer season. In the holidays the water is full of classes, so share the peaks and avoid paddling through a lesson. The site marks Towan as dog friendly, with the usual caveat that seasonal rules and flagged zones override a general note — check the board at the top of the steps.

Use the town-centre car parks and walk down. There is not a large beachfront car park the way there is at Fistral. Cafes are on the cliff above the beach rather than on the sand, which is handy if you are only watching, and a climb if you have forgotten something in the car.
